TUDOR LODGE: SONGS FROM A GENTLE AGE

Tudor Lodge, the fondly remembered British folk group are heard at their melodic best on the Repertoire re-issue of their classic album. It represents music from a gentler age and dare we say happier times in the early Seventies, when the sun shone every day and ‘The Good Life’ was a TV hit show.

STEAMHAMMER REFLECTIONS

Steamhammer was a popular and hardworking British blues group, who went down a storm with fans at clubs and festivals in the Sixties. Their debut album ‘Reflection’ (1969) is once more available on a Repertoire CD and their fans will be chuffed! The group were particularly popular in Germany, where their raunchy number ‘Junior’s Wailing,’ was a big hit and was even covered by Status Quo.

BUFFALO STAMPEDE

Their extraordinary album may have been called ‘Dead Forever’ but they are alive and kicking in the memory of heavy rock fans. Now reissued by Repertoire, Buffalo’s debut, was first released on the Vertigo label in 1972. Described by some critics as ‘truly sinister’ it showcases the work of an Australian outfit that got stuck into heavy psychedelic blues numbers with all the gusto of Outback pioneers.

A DATE WITH BILL

Bill Wyman looks incredibly young and cool in the video for his 1982 surprise hit single ‘(Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star’. Ironically it was the biggest solo hit by any of the Rolling Stones and boosted both his profile and future solo endeavours that had already begun with ‘Stone Alone’ in 1976.

Rock journalist Chris Welch has been a member of the Repertoire team for twenty years. He has written hundreds of CD liner notes for a huge range of album releases since joining the company in 1988. His comprehensive knowledge of the rock and pop world is based on a career that began in the Swinging Sixties.

As Features Editor on Melody Maker he wrote about all the major rock and pop groups including The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, The Who, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Each week he reported on rising stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Tom Jones, Scott Walker, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Jiving K.Boots.

After 40 years Chris is still writing about pop and rock and playing the drums. His current favourite group is Kings of Leon. Each fortnight Chris reminisces about his adventures as a music journalist and reports on the latest news ('Elvis To Tour Shock'), in CHRIS’ CORNER.
