Keep Your Eye On the Sparrow
When disco meets soul the result is pure magic - and it’s the kind of exhilarating performance Merry Clayton delivers on this well produced and diverse album.
The title track ‘Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow’ was the theme tune from Seventies TV cop series ‘Baretta’, also recorded by Sammy Davis Jnr. However, Ms.Clayton’s performance is more dynamic, as you’d expect from the girl from New Orleans who came to fame duetting with Mick Jagger on ‘Gimme Shelter’.
First released in 1975, this CD showcases the different aspects of Merry’s style on a variety of songs. Many were composed by Eugene McDaniels, such as ‘Gets Hard Sometimes’ and the smooth jazz tune ‘If I Lose’. But she also tackles Bob Dylan’s ‘Rainy Day Women Nos.12 & 35’ in a New Orleans funky style and digs into the country rock ballad ‘Room 205’. Other highlights are an emotional ‘How’d I Know (That Love Would Slip Away)’ and disco stomper ‘One More Ride’.
With backing by top session musicians - sparked by Steve Gadd on drums and Hugh McCracken and David Spinozza on guitars - this a superb album from one of America’s class act soul divas.
